Cycling is not just cycling
Everything has to work together perfectly — it’s all about the whole!
Lukas Kaufman, mountain biker from Austria
It's not just his bike that determines success—his body also has to be in top shape, because one thing he’s learned over the years as an athlete is: “Everything has to work together perfectly; it’s all about the whole package!” The 22-year-old Austrian has been competing in mountain bike races for over 10 years and takes on every new challenge. In 2015, at the world’s toughest mountain bike marathon—covering 211 km, 7,149 meters of elevation, and with over 800 participants—he finished in 15th place. At first, he was always found at the back of the pack, but over time, both his body and his equipment improved, and now he is among the best mountain bikers of his age group in Austria.

„How tight should I now tighten this screw so that everything holds perfectly but nothing breaks…?"
In the lower racing classes, working on the bike is not yet the main focus. But there’s a lot to optimize on a mountain bike. Not only lightweight components for saving weight, lighter tires, shortened cables, and similar adjustments are important for him to succeed. It also has to be quick and easy to do—even if something breaks during the race. So, it’s not just training and the right bike that matter, but also having the right tools is essential. The first challenges came pretty quickly, Lukas says: “How tight should I fasten this screw so that everything holds perfectly, but nothing breaks…?” “Tightening to 3/5/8/25Nm by hand based on feel is impossible. So it became clear: I don’t just need the best bike, I also need the best tools!!” “My bike is at the starting line looking like new at every race, and all the bolts are checked, which always gives me peace of mind. Because in the descents and downhills, we’re always pushing the limit during the race, and I have to be able to trust my bike 100 percent.”

What makes Lukas a Tool Rebel?
For us, Lukas is not just a Wera Tool Rebel because he uses our tools, but also because he practices an extraordinary sport at his age – and does so very successfully! In Austria, he is among the best mountain bikers.
For us, he clearly questions the standard and is not satisfied with what is given to him – he is always looking for new challenges. He constantly works on himself and tries to optimize everything that can be improved.
